West Virginia State Police say an elderly man was killed on Tuesday in Calhoun County in what appears to be a home invasion gone wrong.

It happened at a home on Cain Road in Big Bend.

The victim, Eugene Stevens, was the person living in the home.

West Virginia State Troopers say a gun fight started once Stevens realized people were breaking in and he fired his gun to defend himself.

Stevens fired several shots at the intruders and hit one of them.

Police think that man was dropped off later at Minnie Hamilton Hospital in Grantsville.

Troopers say four people in an SUV dropped him off at the hospital and sped away.

The SUV was later found burned and abandoned near Arnoldsburg.

Police say evidence at the home suggests the person dropped off at the hospital had been at Stevens' home.

Arrests in this case are expected to be made soon.
