VIENNA, W.Va.-(WTAP) 11/28/2017
The parent company of Elder-Beerman stores announces its store at the Grand Central Mall in Vienna will close on Jan. 31.
According to a news release from Bon-Ton Stores, Inc., the store will remain open until Jan. 31, when its lease expires. The closing will affect approximately 54 employees.
"Our more than 100 national and local retailers are ready for the busy holiday shopping season," Mall Manager Jody Hopkins said in a statement Tuesday. "As for the announced closing of Elder-Beerman, retail brands come and go and that has always been the case in the retail industry. We have plans to reposition the space and our leasing team is in final discussions with an exciting new tenant, which we will announce as soon as we are able," Hopkins said.
Vienna Mayor Randy Rapp is also optimistic about the future of the property.
"I've had meetings with some people, and it's sad to see them leave, because they've been a great retailer for the city for a long time, and provided a lot of jobs," the mayor said Tuesday. "But, yes, I believe there are changes coming that will be exciting for the city of Vienna."
Elder-Beerman has been in operation at the mall since the 1990's. Before that, Stone and Thomas occupied that location, preceded by The Diamond until the early 1980's.
“We would like to thank the loyal customers who have shopped with Elder-Beerman over the years as well as our devoted store associates for their dedication and friendly customer service to this community," Bill Tracy, president and chief executive officer for The Bon-Ton Stores, Inc. said in the company's news release on the closing
According to that same news release, come January, associates at this location will be offered the opportunity to interview for available positions at other store locations or receive career transition benefits, including severance, according to established practices and state employment service support.
According to media reports, Bon-Ton, which operates stores under a variety of names, announced recently it would soon be closing 40 stores nationwide.
For the City of Vienna, the closing announcement comes two weeks after Sears Holdings said it would be closing the Vienna K-Mart store by early January.
