Former PHS crew team captain honored

PARKERSBURG, W.Va. (WTAP) -- Friends, family and Parkersburg High School crew team members gathered at the Parkersburg Rowing Club dock to dedication a new "Big Reds" crew boat Tuesday evening.

The four-man rowing boat cost $30,000 and was funded through an anonymous alumni donation.

Morgan Grimm rowed for four years and was the 2016-2017 team captain. She died in a traffic accident while returning home from West Virginia University in September 2016.

Her spirit inspires her teammates and relatives.

"We'll always remember Morgan," says coach Jim Van Allen. "We loved her: she was a great rower, a good leader, a great student and we just wanna have her live on with us."

The "Morgan Grimm Regatta" will be held later this year and will welcome other teams to compete in Parkersburg in her name.

The PHS crew team also plans to hold a three-day training camp in early July to introduce middle-school students to the sport.
