Grant sought ahead of Parkersburg wrestling tournament

Wrestlers from throughout the region are coming to Parkersburg in January.

And local tourism officials want to show them all the city has to offer.

The Wood County Commission Monday authorized the Wood County Visitors and Convention Bureau to seek an Innovation Grant.

The money will help the CVB advertise motels, stores and other attractions for the upcoming Duals Wrestling Tournament.

It will be held at Parkersburg and Parkersburg South high schools.

"They're expecting right around 800 participants for the tournament, so that will be a lot of people visiting the area and checking out local shops and hotels, and everything going on in the area," says Derek Fleming, the CVB's sports marketing specialist. "It keeps growing every year, and it's something we like to support, with youth wrestling is one of the pinnacles of our sports around here."

The tournament includes elementary, middle and high school students from several states.

The grant also will fund a scholarship that will be awarded one of the wrestlers in the tournament.
