MOUNDSVILLE, W.Va. (WTAP) - Tow boat operators and the U.S. Coast Guard chased dozens of barges that broke loose, and floated by themselves down the Ohio River Saturday.
Drone video from Axial Momentum, LLC shows one barge nearly capsized at the Moundsville Bridge in West Virginia, and another tied off to trees at Powhatan Point in Ohio.
Columbus NBC affiliate WMCH says the accident took place during the ice and snow storm hitting southeast Ohio and the northern panhandle of West Virginia.
Police report dozens of barges slipped their moorings and were "free floating" between Mcmechen and Moundsville West Virginia.
Some had pushed their way clear up to steps at the bank. Officers shut down the Ohio River Bridge at Moundsville for a short time Saturday morning while working to wrangle the barges.
