MARIETTA, Ohio (WTAP) - March 29 is Vietnam Veterans Day. On that day in 1973, the last combat troops were withdrawn from Vietnam.
During a ceremony in Marietta at the armory, many of the men and women who served were honored. This included those in the branches of the Army, Air Force, Navy and the Marines.
One veteran shared his story about returning home to a less than welcoming atmosphere. He says it's important that we never forget those who paid the ultimate price for our freedom.
"One of the hardest things that ever happened to me upon returning home from combat was I had to bury my uniform in the back of my closet. I realized the honor and respect received by veterans before me, I could not have," said Staff Sergeant Tim Peterson, Vietnam veteran.
More than 58,000 laid down their lives in service to our nation during the Vietnam War. Of those killed, 61% were younger than 21.
