Gassaway, WV (WTAP) – A West Virginia food bank that distributes 13.7 million pounds of food annually to people in 48 counties has received a grant from the Walmart Foundation.
The Mountaineer Food Bank, founded in 1981 in Gassaway, WV, announced on Wednesday it has received a $50,000 grant from the Walmart Foundation.
The food bank says the money will fund infrastructure improvements to handle perishable food, including new refrigerated vehicles, coolers and freezers for transporting, storing and distributing food, thermometers, temperature calibration devices and other items.
Officials at the Mountaineer Food Bank say 1 in 7 West Virginia residents struggle with hunger, including more than 82,000 children.
The Mountaineer Food Bank provides food and other household items to over 440 feeding programs in 48 counties in West Virginia.
