BELMONT, W.Va. (WTAP) - Wetzel County native Eric Croasmun says he knew he wanted to become a school principal when he was in high school. He said he had a great relationship with his high school principal, which eventually led him down the education track.

For the last four years, Croasmun taught social studies at Pleasants County Middle School in Belmont. Now he's become the principal for Belmont Elementary School.

Thursday was the first day of school for 1st through 4th grade. Kindergarten starts next week and preschool begins the week after.

Croasmun is optimistic about the school year.

"I hope to continue on the great things the school is already doing and has a great staff and great students," he said.

"They've got a lot of programs that are very successful here and hope to continue building upon those programs and increase the achievement of our students."

Croasmun says the staff has worked hard to make for a smooth transition into the school year.

"I'm really excited to be here. This is a great school. I've been well supported by the teachers who have helped me get acclimated to the position."
