PARKERSBURG, W.Va.-(wtap) Looking for a few good men-and women.
The Parkersburg Police Department is recruiting new officers.
You might have seen the signs around the city, encouraging people to join the force.
It does not mean the department is under-staffed, at least right now.
Police Chief Joe Martin says it does expect some retirements before the end of 2016.
But in the new budget year, beginning next Friday, it has funding for four new officers.
And the chief says recruiting for the department isn't as easy as it was two decades ago.
"It was commonplace to see 4-500 people taking the test. Today, we're lucky to see 100 show up. So we have to come up with creative ways to recruit, retain and maintain our staffing."
A written test for officer hopefuls is scheduled for July ninth.
There's also a test of physical skills planned.
Chief Martin says the department also has to do background checks on applicants before hiring takes place.
