Recent arrest a reminder of elderly scams

BELPRE, Oh.-(WTAP) We told you this week about an arrest on a theft charge involving an elderly Washington County man.

Sheriff's deputies say Hope Thomas of Cutler, Ohio is accused of stealing money from a Barlow Township man whom she was helping with daily activities.

The thefts, according to investigators, involved thousands of dollars in cash and unauthorized debit card payments.

Becky Hennen, manager of the Belpre Senior Citizens Center, hosts programs on scams. She says this is a reason to check out any private individual you're seeking out to help with financial affairs.

"Sometimes, it's even family members; you have to be real careful," Hennen says. "Don't give out any personal information, especially to someone you don't know. Especially if it's someone you don't know really well, make sure you check them out first."

Hennen says to check references, and find out as much as you can about who you hire.
