PARKERSBURG, W.Va. (WTAP) - The countdown to next year's midterm elections is underway.

A West Virginia Congressman is making stops all over the mountain state as part of his campaign for the U.S. Senate.

On Thursday, Congressman Evan Jenkins (R) made a trip to the Mid-Ohio Valley. He visited the Department of Veterans Affairs Outpatient Clinic in Parkersburg, where he spoke to staff and patients to learn about the facility and the quality of its services.

"I've had the opportunity to talk some of the veterans here how's it going how are you going hear about not only their service to our country but hear about how the service we are providing for them," Jenkins said.

He serves on the Appropriation Subcommittee that funds all veterans affairs in the country, which makes the trip all the more important.

He says it's vital that top-notch care is readily available.

"We want to make sure that veterans don't have to drive long distances just to have a medical exam, just to have bloodwork done, just to have an X-ray."

He rounded out his trip by talking about job growth at manufacturing facilities in Wood County.
