Retailer H&M announces plans for new store in Grand Central Mall

PARKERSBURG, W.Va. (WTAP) - Just a day after news that the Bon-Ton Stores Inc.., will be closing the Elder-Beerman store in the Grand Central Mall in January, another national retailer announced plans today to fill that space in the mall.

In a news release, H & M, a Sweden-based company with offices in New York, said it will be opening a store in the mall sometime next fall.

Jody Hopkins, the mall's general manager, issued the following state Wednesday afternoon:

“Grand Central Mall is proud to bring H&M to the Mid-Ohio Valley area," he said. "This is an exciting time for Grand Central Mall as we continue to diversify our tenancy, offering a dynamic selection of fashion forward retailers alongside a mix of popular dining and entertainment options, as well as events and activities throughout the year.” Jody Hopkins, general manager at Grand Central Mall."

This will be H&M's first store in West Virginia, and it will employ between 20 and 30 people. The store will occupy about 20,000-square feet in the site currently occupied by Elder-Beerman.

H&M will offer Mid-Ohio Valley shoppers a one-stop shopping destination for clothing for the whole family, with collections for ladies, men and teens, as well as separate “store within a store” sections for accessories.

The mall location will also carry the H&M Kids collection for newborns to 14 year olds.

Spokesman Patrick Shaner says the company decided on the Grand Central Mall site for several reasons.

"Two of the main factors for us are location, and finding the best location," he said. "So, in that our team definitely found in in the Grand Central Mall. And then customer base, of course. So, we felt there was a need there, and it's always, you know, the top priority for us is putting the customer first and getting the customers what they want and need. And so that's kind of what we're responding to with this."
