Scam letter making its rounds in Parkersburg

PARKERSBURG, W.Va (WTAP)- The 2014 U.S. Census says there's almost 4 million disabled veterans in our country. But the Latrobe Street Mission wants you to be aware of a related scam.

The mission says a man is sending out letters claiming to be a disabled veteran.

He's asking for a car and money. He's also been known to panhandle in south Parkersburg near Kmart and Walmart, wearing a fake military uniform.

"He had been a resident here and he used Latrobe Street's name and address to receive donations falsely. His uniform that he's wearing as he's panhandling is not military issue. It doesn't have his name on it. It has somebody else's name on it. He's wearing tennis shoes and of course military, they know what their uniform is," said Sandra Clay, Financial Director of the Latrobe Street Mission.

The Latrobe Street Mission wants people to encourage panhandles to come to their mission instead of giving them money.
