Winter safety tips for your car

MARIETTA, Ohio (WTAP) The holidays are upon us, which means many people will be hitting the roads to see friends and family.

There are a few things you should remember before you head out.

Law enforcement says you never know when you will run in to bad weather, so it's important to have everything you need in case you get stranded.

Water, batteries, chargers, extra clothes, food, ice scrapers, and salt are all good things to keep in your car during the cold winter months.

If you do get stranded, stay put and stay calm.

Crack your window and run your car on and off to stay warm until help comes.

"We will be there to get you, though. If there's snow that's so deep, there will be, eventually, before long, four-wheel drives out looking for stranded motorists. Don't leave your car and go trenching through the snow some place. That's dangerous for you," says Washington County Sheriff, Larry Mincks.

Law enforcement also encourages you to get your car checked before venturing out on any long trips.
