Wood Co. Schools Oppose Bullying

PARKERSBURG, WV (WTAP)-- Wood county schools will receive two honors this week.

First, Wood county students will experience an anti-bullying program over the next two days.

Mary Ann Laughery of Community Bank told the board, Nation-wide statistics would indicate 580 students in Wood County will experience bullying in some form.

Guest motivational speaker Tom Thelen will appear in Wood County Schools Wednesday and Thursday as part of the Anti-Bullying campaign, sponsored by Community Bank.

In other business, the Board of Education also received a donation from "Books-A-Million". They also recognized Teacher of the Year Mary Blaker for her work in the ninth grade classroom

"I feel like I'm a representative now for wood county... if I've never been one before, I definitely am one now... because we have so many really fantastic teachers here in Wood County.," says Mary Blaker. " I believe they said that there were over 100 nominations and around 70 actual applications for this, so it's a VERY big honor to even receive the award."

Blaker says tomorrow she'll be back in the classroom teaching ninth grade once again.
