ATHENS, Ohio (WTAP) This week we are highlighting Athens County in our special, "Your Town: Athens County."
We will be at various places around the county all week long. We begin the week at the Athens County Fair.
The fair officially kicked off last Friday and there were a few events over the weekend.
Monday, all of the excitement is really picking up. The rides are open and the animal shows start Tuesday.
You can expect all of the traditional events this week.
The demolition derby, rodeo, and all of the rides and livestock shows are just a few of the highlights.
The Athens County Fair is also bringing big time wrestling into the mix this year, as well as a hillside stage for local residents to showcase their own talents.
The fair has been around for more than 160 years and the fair board says its the people that keep it going.
"It's unique when you have a fair this old that we now have 4-H advisers helping kids and they've shown at this fair, and their grand-kids have shown at this fair. It's really a traditional thing for Athens County and something we don't want to give up and we want to keep strong," says Athens County Fair Board President, Calvin Jarvis.
The fair runs through this Saturday with different highlighted events each night.
