Madeline Shimer Prather, 94, of Belpre, Ohio passed away peacefully into the awaiting arms of God on November 9, 2017.

She was born on June 7, 1923 in Freed, West Virginia to L.H. “Harley” and Lovisa (Fox) Shimer.

She was the grandchild of Benjamin Bruce and Myrtle Estell (Trippett) Shimer and Clement Landingham and Susanna (Yoak) Fox.

Madeline grew up during the Great Depression, working with her father in his mercantile business in Munday, WV. This experience instilled in her a tremendous gentleness and kindness toward the people in her life. She seldom missed an opportunity to send a card or say an encouraging word. She was a 1941 graduate of Wirt County High School. After graduating High School, she attended Mountain State College in Parkersburg, WV. In 1945 she married her loving husband Denzil L. Prather. During their lifetime they resided in Marietta, OH, Creston, WV, Midland, TX and in 1957 settled down in Belpre, Ohio. They attended the Belpre Congregational Church where Madeline was a member of the Board of Deacons and Deaconesses and a member of the Service Class. She was a Charter member of the Belpre Women’s Club. Madeline enjoyed spending time with her family at home and at their farm in Ritchie County, WV. She will be greatly missed at the annual Easter Egg Hunt at the farm. She was proud of her heritage and being a decedent of George Washington Shimer and Christopher Columbus Fox.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband Denzil Lewis Prather; daughter Kathy Taylor; sister Mavadelle Lieving; brothers Ronald Shimer and Herbert Shimer.

She is survived by 5 children; Denzil L. (Lynn) Prather, Jr. of Parkersburg, WV; Linda (Mike) Holtgrewe of Covington, GA; Mary (Nathan) Smith of Warner Robins, Ga; Anne (Ron) Scarbro of Westerville, OH; David (Missy) Prather of Vienna, WV, son-in-law Pat Taylor of Myrtle Beach, SC; 15 grandchildren; 23 great grandchildren; brother Donald (Pat) Shimer of Sun City West, Arizona; sister Barbara (Harold) Butcher of Sandusky, Ohio; brother-in-law Bruce (Patricia) Prather of Abingdon, VA; sister-in-law Wilma Anderson of Midland, TX; many nieces, nephews and several cousins.

Services will be conducted at 11:00 am Monday, November 13, at Leavitt Funeral Home, Belpre with Rev. Deborah Jeanblanc and Rev. Brian Harrell officiating.

Burial will be at Rockland Cemetery, Belpre, OH.

Visitation will be from 2 - 4 and 6 - 8 on Sunday and one hour prior to the service on Monday.
