Fairmont Senior captures first Class AA title since 1997

CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) - Abby Bowles had 23 points, eight rebounds and five steals to lead second-seeded Fairmont Senior to a 54-42 victory over No. 1 Bluefield in the girls Class AA state championship Saturday.

Fairmont Senior won its first championship since 1997. It was the third straight year the Polar Bears made the title game, falling to Sissonville in 2015 and Wyoming East in 2016.

Anysa Jordan had 17 points and 12 rebounds and Abby Stoller had six points and 11 rebounds for Fairmont Senior.

Fairmont Senior broke open a close game in the second quarter. Jordan had two baskets during a 9-0 run to give the Polar Bears (24-4) a 21-12 lead.

After falling behind 41-24, Bluefield twice cut the deficit to seven points in the fourth quarter. But Fairmont got two free throws from Bowles and a three-point play from Jordan to seal it.

Jaisah Smith had 12 points to lead Bluefield (23-3) and Dani Janutolo and Autumn Spangler had 10 apiece.
