With the Ohio River now falling, the gates along Parkersburg's floodwall are opening.
At three spots closed over the weekend, including Point Park and Third Street, the gates were removed Tuesday afternoon, but there are some places where gates never have been closed in the floodwall's more than 50-year history.
They include Murdoch Avenue near Grand Central Avenue.
"They put in half the gate just to test it, but the whole gate has never been put in," said floodwall manager Rick Phillips. “The water has never been up that high."
Phillips explains that the river would have to rise to at least 48 feet before the Murdoch Avenue gate would be needed.
