Campbell Soup Co. is recalling a day's production of cream of mushroom soup after cans were found to contain New England clam chowder, which could pose a danger to people allergic to shellfish, the company said.
The company discovered the problem after receiving consumer complaints. It was not clear how many cans were affected, but Campbell said it was "a small quantity."
Some people run a risk of a severe or life-threatening reaction if they eat shellfish. The company said it had received no reports of illnesses.
The cans labeled "Campbell's Condensed Cream of Mushroom" bear the date code “AUG 2004 08292” and “CU B8EL,” followed by four numbers representing military time.
The Camden-based company distributed the cans to retail stores in 13 states:
- New York
- North Dakota
- South Dakota
People who bought the cans should return them to the stores where they were purchased for a full refund, the company said.
