Until three years ago, it was a school for teaching elementary youngsters, and now, a new group of people will be educated at the former Rayon school.
Rayon Monday was dedicated as the location of the new Parkersburg police training school. It will help officers learn techniques such as using dogs to sniff out drugs, and learning how to react in emergency situations. It also could help train police from outside the area.
"We've got people from all over Ohio and West Virginia coming in to train with their dogs now," says police detective Greg Collins. "We've just started with this unit; if we get a little more funding, we will have one of the best K-9 training facilities in our region."
The building also will be the new site of Parkersburg's latest police sub-station, which officials hope will be a benefit to Parkersburg's south side.
