Gov. Wise is encouraging West Virginians to approve a constitutional amendment that would give bonuses to veterans who served in Kosovo, Afghanistan or Iraq, and to the families of those killed.
As many as 2,900 veterans could qualify for a bonus of $400 or $600. The families of veterans killed in any of the three campaigns may qualify for $2,000.
Tuesday, Wise launched a six-city tour to encourage voters to modify West Virginia's Constitution so the bonuses can be paid. The tour will take him to Clarksburg, Martinsburg, Wheeling, Beckley, Huntington and Parkersburg on Wednesday.
Wise first discussed the idea last September, saying he was sure the Legislature would endorse the proposal to spend up to $8 million as a token of the state's appreciation.
Lawmakers approved a resolution to place the issue on the ballot on the last day of this year's 60-day session.
