The Wood County Commission is kick-starting efforts to build new headquarters for the American Red Cross.
The commissioners voted Monday morning to give $10,000 toward construction of the new headquarters for the Mid-Ohio Valley Chapter of the American Red Cross.
Plans call for the new building to be built on the site of the current structure, located at Eighth and Market Streets.
"It's going to be a major deal to keep the Red Cross here," says campaign chairman Jamie Six. "They've tried to rehab the building, and it's not rehabable."
The Red Cross has been working from offices in the Mid-Ohio Valley Chamber of Commerce building for the past two years.
"When they tried to redo the roof, they found it was beyond repair," Six says. "They did try to rehab the building."
A full announcement of a fundraising campaign is scheduled to be made February 10.
