The event marks the beginning of the Heart of Our Community Campaign.
A program designed to raise money for scholarships so that kids can enjoy programs for free. Organizers say the YMCA is here to give back to the community, and no child should miss out because they can't afford it.
They offered $137,000 in scholarships just last year. It's all about the three areas of focus: youth development, healthy living, and social responsibility.
Director Chad Smith says he sees the difference it makes in the lives of children.
"You see the long term results. You know for some of them it's the confidence that they get from learning how to swim. For others it's learning about teamwork through being a part of youth sports programs. There's so many different ways. And for some it's just getting healthier which has short-term and long-term benefits. But there's so many different ways and it's unique to all of them," says Executive Director for YMCA Chad Smith.
The fundraising drive ends in a celebration of community support.
The YMCA honors one person with the Edwin L.D. Dils award for volunteering.
This year's recipient is Ann Bailey.
