Pickering Sixth Cornerstone

For more than 10 years, she's dedicated her time to encouraging arts in our schools.

Jan Pickering is named the sixth ‘Cornerstone of Our Community’ for her unwavering commitment to bring violin lessons to local school children.

It's the Parkersburg Area Community Foundation's 50th anniversary year. The foundation received a $10,000 gift from Superior Toyota, making it possible for them to choose ten individuals or organizations to be recognized as cornerstones.

Pickering is currently out of state, so 10-year-old Jackson, her student at Williamstown Elementary, accepted the award on her behalf.

“She deserves it,” Jackson says. “She teaches me a lot of things and makes me better, like a nice teacher who inspires us. Congratulations, you've been a nice teacher for me.”

Pickering created a lasting and comprehensive strings education program in the Williamstown and Waverly Schools. She volunteers at least 20 hours a week up to 40 weeks each year to keep it going for the students.
