With thousands of homes in the Mid-Ohio Valley still without power Thursday night, and refrigerators and freezers not working, experts say people should be careful of what they eat.
OSU Consumer Science Educator, Kathryn Dodrill, said any food that stays above 40 degrees for more than two hours should be discarded, especially meats and dairy products.
After that, foods begin to grow bacteria, which can cause food poisoning.
"We really want to avoid at all costs people having food born illnesses, and so keeping food cold below 40 degrees is important," Dodrill said.
Dodrill suggests keeping freezer and refrigerator doors closed as much as possible, and that everyone should follow the rule, "when in doubt, throw it out."
