Turning Off the Lights

Many lights around the world will all be turned off Saturday night at the same time, and stay off for one hour.

The Empire State Building, the Eiffel Tower and Egypt's Great Pyramid of Giza are just a few places planning to flip the switch.

"I'll probably watch the game, hang out with some friends. That's what I usually do on Saturday nights," Frank Cikach said.

But for Cikach, this Saturday night might be a little different. That's because when the clock strikes 8:30, the lights are going out.

"It might be a little inconvenient, but it's something I would do for the environment," Cikach said.

Cikach plans to participate in earth hour; drawing attention to global warming, and he's not the only one who will be flipping the switch.

"I'm in a facebook group about it actually." Ted Bogner, who plans to participate, said. "I think it's a good idea. We should do it more often."

"I think it's everyone's job to participate and be part of it," Luke Haumesser, who also plans to participate, said.

Many say they're planning to join in on the effort to save energy by hitting the switch, but others aren't convinced that one hour can really make a difference, and so their Saturday night plans don't include sitting in the dark.

"Just make sure you're always turning off the lights and be conscious of having lights on and having lights off, and that will save more energy than just having it on one day, because one day isn't gonna help the whole entire world," Miranda Hall, who doesn't plan to participate, said.

So whether you make small efforts year round, or take part in a worldwide movement; either way, every light turned off sheds a little more light on the environment.
