Only The Memories Remain

All that remained Friday of Hensler's Town and Country Market were the flowers and produce it was selling to the public just hours before the major fire broke out. Investigators say it started in a utility room, and while it's not known whether it was an electrical fire, the businesses' power boxes were located there.

“Due to the different businesses that have been in there, and the different construction over the years, (the age of the building) could have been a factor as far as the electrical service goes and the wiring throughout the building,” says Dan Benson.

This building has housed a produce business for just the last 20 years or so. Before that, it was a restaurant, remembered both by people who ate there and worked there. Michael Gulliver once owned the former adventure galley restaurant in downtown Marietta, but before he ran a restaurant, he waited on tables for the eatery which once was housed in this building.

“Cernus family was instrumental in me learning the restaurant business, which helped when we did the Adventure Galley. Being a busboy and the customer service that would be required, and the quality of product, says Gulliver.

It's not known whether the owners will try to rebuild the business, but Gulliver calls the land itself prime property. The last large fire the Marietta Fire Department fought in 2001 also destroyed a local landmark, the Elks Lodge on Front Street.
