Big Bear Goes Krogering

A grocery company in chapter eleven bankruptcy is selling several of its stores to another grocer, whose workers are on strike.

Penn Traffic Company plans to sell 11 of its Big Bear stores to Kroger, including the store in Marietta's Frontier Shopping Center.

Kroger owns several stores in the mid-Ohio Valley. New York-based Penn Traffic, which has been in bankruptcy proceedings since May, already has plans to close 41 more by the end of the year.

Penn Traffic says a December 3 auction is scheduled to sell real estate, store leases and warehouse facilities. Penn Traffic says it is considering a number of strategies, including selling or closing the entire Big Bear division.
