Out of the Darkness Walk Attracts Hundreds

By  |

Hundreds of people gathered in City Park Saturday morning for the Out of the Darkness Community Walk.

This second annual walk is a way to raise money and awareness for depression and suicide prevention.

Event coordinator Dr. Libby Powers says there is traditionally less research on suicide than other medical fields, and hopes to help fill that gap, and show community support at the same time.

"Most importantly I'd say, is for our community to increase awareness about mental illness and depression, and to get more people to know that there is help and hope out there for them," Dr. Powers said.

She says the event brought in nearly $9,000.

All proceeds will benefit the Nonprofit American Foundation for Suicide Prevention.

Dr. Powers says they will be accepting donations from now until December.
