Family Escapes Fire

Updated: Tue 8:06 PM, Dec 30, 2003

A Parkersburg family escapes an early morning fire that heavily damaged their Rayon Drive home.

There was heavy smoke and flames coming from the two-story wood frame home when firefighters arrived just after 2 a.m. Tuesday morning.

Damage is estimated at $60,000. The Parkersburg Fire Department was still investigating late Tuesday morning to determine the fire's cause.

Carl Sizemore said, “There's a front bedroom, and that's what we're looking at as the area of origin. That seems to be the most damage and where the fire was first reported at.”

Joanie Wedekamm and her four children were able to escape the burning home because they were alerted by the home's smoke detector.

They were taken to Camden-Clark Memorial Hospital.
