Washington (AP) -- Senator Robert C. Byrd has paid tribute to longtime friend Edward Kennedy in a speech in Washington.

In a strong voice that hasn't been heard on the senate floor since February, the 91-year-old West Virginia democrat reminisced Thursday about Kennedy's personal gestures, love of life and accomplishments.

He remembered how kennedy gave him dozens of roses on his wedding anniversary and would bring his dogs to Byrd's office for visits.

In closing, Byrd recited from a book of poetry that Kennedy had given him.

Byrd spent several weeks in the hospital fighting life-threatening infections this spring and summer and has only spoken rarely in his weakened state.

On Thursday, however, Byrd was steady as he bade a wistful goodbye to Kennedy, who died last month.
