The next few months is a critical time for retailers as they work to keep sales up during the fourth spending quarter.
Shop owners say October is when folks begin their holiday shopping.
Businesses aren't expecting customers to spend as much money this season as in the past; however, retailers say people will still buy for family and friends, and so this year's strategy is to sell more items at lower prices.
"Right now we're trying to improve our inventory and increase certain departments here in the store," Mike Roberts at Zides Sport Shop said.
"We have never had more inventory in our store in 90 years than we do right now," Larry Hall at Baker and Baker said.
Shop owners say the majority of consumer spending is done October through December.
