Taxing Times

Tax season is in full swing and certain groups of people can get free help in completing their income tax returns.

The Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Program is offering assistance to low and moderate-income people, as well as senior citizens.

It can help people who can't afford having their taxes done by a private tax preparer.

"Just last year, we had a thousand people show up at the Parkersburg and Vienna libraries,' says Lou Bogdan, a VITA volunteer. "With that many people having their returns done, that's doing quite a service."

Electronic filing as well as traditional filing of paper tax returns is available at a number of locations in Wood County. Assistance is available Monday and Saturday mornings and Wednesday evenings at the Wood County Public Library on Emerson Avenue in Parkersburg.

It's also available Tuesday evenings and Wednesday mornings at the Vienna Public Library on Grand Central Avenue.

You're required to bring with you a copy of last year's tax return, proof of your social security number and all W-2 and other tax withholding forms.
