College Changes

A House vote is set for Monday concerning a proposal to remove ten community and technical schools statewide from the higher education policy commission on July 1.

Among the breakaway schools is West Virginia University at Parkersburg, as well as WVU's affiliate at Montgomery.

The proposal comes as a 241-page amendment added last week to a Senate-passed bill addressing higher education advisory boards.

House Education Chairman Jerry Mezzatesta says a 12-member council, independent of and equal to the higher education policy commission, would oversee this new community college system and appoint its own chancellor.

A WVUP spokeswoman says the school just received a copy of the proposal on Friday, and hasn't completely studied it yet. The plan is estimated to shave more than $50 million from the state budget.
