Charleston, W.Va. (AP) -- A Parkersburg girl has been named the winner of a national civics contest.
Twelve-year-old Madelon Kerns' entry was chosen over 600 others in Scholastic Media's "Be Big In Your Community Contest."
Her proposal for a special needs accessible playground in her hometown earned a $25,000 grant.
The company said Monday she came up with the idea after she was unable to play in a local park with a friend who is in a wheelchair.
The contest was part of Scholastic's "Clifford The Big Red Dog Be Big!" campaign to support civic engagement.
The contest encouraged submissions that demonstrated Clifford's ideas for sharing, helping others, kindness, respect, truthfulness, responsibility and playing fairly.
