For the second time in less than a week, a Parkersburg High School student dies in a vehicle crash, this time under strange circumstances.
Law enforcement authorities say the 17-year-old Tuesday morning stole a Dudley's Florist delivery van parked at Dudley's offices located near the high school.
The crash happened after a city police officer tried to question the driver near U.S. Route 50 and Interstate 77.
"The vehicle was stopped in traffic, (the officer) actually approached the vehicle and talked to the driver," says Parkersburg Police Chief Bob Newell. The driver then fled, and eventually went outside the city, and apparently crashed.
The youth, whose identity has not yet been released, died when the van crashed on Loomis Ridge Road shortly after 10 a.m.
The Wood County Sheriff's Office is seeking information from anyone in the Red Hill Road and Loomis Ridge area who witnessed Tuesday morning's crash.
If you have any information, you're asked to call Deputy Brett Pickens at the Sheriff’s Department. The number is 304-424-1834.
