Special Smoke Alarms

Wood and Wirt County's hearing-impaired residents will soon have a chance to receive special smoke detectors.

Unlike normal smoke alarms, these use a flashing light to alert those who can't hear them. They're being funded through a governor's community partnership grant.

If purchased individually, the hearing-impaired alarms would cost nearly $180.

Tech Link, a joint venture of the ark of Wood County and West Virginia Assistive Technology Systems, is handling the program locally.
