It's official. The bridge connecting South Parkersburg to 7th Street is now named in honor of a former Parkersburg mayor.
A ceremonial ribbon cutting Monday renamed the East Street Bridge the William P.A. Nicely Memorial Bridge.
The event was attended by Wood County Commissioner, and area state legislators who proposed the name change during last winter's regular legislative session.
Also attending was Nicely's widow, Marjorie, who says the honor is one which the former mayor would have been proud of.
Nicely, who died in 1991, was a six-term member of the West Virginia House of Delegates, and served three terms as Parkersburg's mayor.
His first administration was in the 1970's, and he returned to office for one more term in the 1980's.
