One of those feeling the pinch is Marietta's Campus Martius Museum. It has been closed to the public two days out of each week this summer, because of declining state support. 70 percent of the museum's operating revenues come from Columbus.

Museum director John Briley says July and August are usually the museum's busiest months, and the numbers so far for July don't look good.

"We're down about one-third of our normal attendance," Briley says. "Across the state we're down about 10 percent. Up until this month, we were running pretty well what we should be running this time of year, but this month, we were running about a third."

Briley estimates 1,000 people have visited Campus Martius this summer, compared with 1,500 by this time last summer.

He says the museum is seeing private donations to offset the loss of state money.
