The Parkersburg Police Department now officially has a new leader. Wednesday morning, Joe Martin was sworn in as the city's police chief.

Sergeant Joseph Martin was confirmed as the new chief of police for the city of Parkersburg Thursday night by a 6 to 1 vote of city council.

Chief Martin has been with the Parkersburg Police Department for more than 12 years.

He says it's an honor to be named chief over a department that's so important to the community.

"It feels good to know that we have a lot of skilled folks on the department to serve the city, and they get their money's worth; there's no doubt about that. There's a lot of dedicated guys in the department to carry on tradition that we've had in place for a long time, and that's a good thing," Chief Martin said.

Many friends, family and co-workers came out to support Chief Martin as he was sworn in.
