Thousands of dollars missing from the Wood County Sheriff's Office has investigators trying to figure out where the money went. Meanwhile the sheriff's department is working to make sure this type of incident doesn't happen again.
After taking office, Sheriff Jeff Sandy ordered an audit of all department activity.
As a result, it was discovered that nearly $8,000 was missing from a drug forfeiture fund.
Sheriff Sandy says the department has since made some major changes in how money is handled.
"Individuals who have authorization to write checks are not the individuals that make the deposits. Individuals that balance the bank accounts are not the individuals involved with making the decisions of where that money is spent," Sheriff Sandy said.
He also says investigators with the Parkersburg and Vienna Police Departments, as well as the West Virginia State Police are working on the case.
