Text messaging is behind a scam targeting Ohioans who receive cash and food stamp assistance.
The Washington County Department of Job and Family Services has been advised by its state coordinator that clients in other counties are being tricked into putting personal information into the wrong hands.
These clients received a text message saying their accounts were frozen, and to call a number where they're prompted to enter account and pin numbers.
"Our agency, Job and Family Services, does not send any type of text messages requesting personal information from clients," Dawn Lucas said.
If you receive this text message, you're asked to call customer service and report it.
Those receiving cash assistance should call 1-866-320-8822.
Those receiving food stamp assistance should call 1-866-386-3071.
