Morgantown, W.Va. (AP) -- Former West Virginia and NFL quarterback Oliver Luck says it's a challenging time to accept the athletic director job at his alma mater.

But he also says it's a tremendous opportunity.

In a conference call with reporters today, Luck cited rumors about conference realignments and what he called other "chess moves" in intercollegiate athletics.

Luck says he'll work to protect West Virginia and to ensure it has the right affiliations.

WVU president James P. Clements announced Luck's appointment this morning.

Clements says luck will receive a base salary of $390,000 a year.

The 50-year-old Luck replaces Ed Pastilong, who is retiring.

Luck takes over July 1. He is currently president of soccer's Houston Dynamo.

He played for the Mountaineers from 1978-81 and ended his career with a school-record 43 touchdown passes.
