W.Va. Chamber Seeks Election For Byrd Successor

Charleston, W.Va. (AP) -- The West Virginia Chamber of Commerce is calling on Gov. Joe Manchin and the legislature to schedule a special election this fall to fill the unexpired term of U.S. Sen. Robert C. Byrd.

Manchin has said he'll begin considering appointees on Wednesday. Byrd died one week ago at 92.

In a news release, the Chamber of Commerce said there is no "clear or absolute" process for filling a vacancy.

It says the people of West Virginia are entitled to select the person who will represent them in the U.S. Senate.

The Chamber called on Manchin to allow the legislature to establish a date for a special election.
