A lot of changes have been made with the election process over the years, and some local poll workers have been right there helping voters get through them.

Carl Ball and Jean Hutchinson were honored by the Washington County Board of Elections Wednesday morning for their 50+ years of service.

Hutchinson began working elections in 1953, and Ball in 1960.

Both say they were honored, and a little surprised when they heard they were being recognized for their work.

"I was shakin' all over, but I was honored to be called," Hutchinson said.

"I thought they had the wrong number. I think that the people on the election board should be the ones being honored," Ball said.

Ball and Hutchinson say they remember long hours of counting ballots by hand, and are amazed at how far the process has come since they started.
