WV Bridges Inspected

Charleston, W.Va. (AP) -- Twenty bridges in the state similar in construction to the Minneapolis span that collapsed last month are safe.

State transportation officials inspected all 20 bridges following the august 1st disaster in Minnesota, which killed 13 people and injured more than 100.

Transportation Secretary Paul Mattox said the bridges all passed inspection.

He said West Virginia has one of the most comprehensive bridge inspection programs in the country.

All states are required by the federal government to inspect bridges at least once every two years. That was inspired by the collapse of the Silver Bridge in Point Pleasant in 1967, which killed 46 people.
