It started as a celebration, and it's now a tradition.
Preparations are under way for this weekend's Belleville Homecoming.
Attractions at the now-27 year old homecoming range from culinary arts to a tractor pull to a dirt bike competition.
It began in 1985-.the year of the community's bi-centennial-as a revival of sorts of an annual picnic held for decades.
"It continued until 1943, and World War II was going on," says Nadine Hofmann, a member of the festival's board of trustees, who was one of its original organizers. "It did not get started again until 1985, when we planned the birthday celebration."
While events begin Friday night, the formal kick-off is Saturday morning, with the annual homecoming parade.
A note to drivers: route 68 will be closed to traffic Saturday morning while that parade is happening.
