Update 3/8/2011 5:55pm
Neale Elementary and Parkersburg High Schools have both been cleared following bomb threats and officials thank everyone involved for their quick response.
Parkersburg Police officials say the threat came into the Belpre 911 center claiming there were bombs at Parkersburg High School and Neale Elementary.
Belpre 911 contacted the Wood County 911 Center and dispatched fire and police to both cities.
At Neale Elementary, students were immediately evacuated and the school was searched by the police, Vienna Volunteer Fire Department, and school officials.
Once authorities determined the school was safe, classes resumed.
Officials say they know how to handle these types of situations and today ran as smoothly as can be expected.
"They did an excellent job. The staff knew exactly what to do as far as evacuating the students. The students were all calm, they did a wonderful job, they were simply told the building needed checked so they stayed out there while the building was checked," says Karen Brunicardi, Director of Elementary Education for Wood County Schools. "The staff communicated via walkie-talkies inside and outside the building. The Vienna Police and fire communicated with us between cell phones and walkie talkies, and did an excellent job. They were able to check the building quickly and return to normal activities."
Over at Parkersburg High School, students were also immediately evacuated once school officials were informed of the bomb threat.
Parkersburg Police and fire responded and searched the school once they arrived.
Assistant Principal at PHS, Jeff Mennillo, says the students handled the evacuation very well, especially since they had to move from their first evacuation site.
"We were instructed to evacuate. We evacuated initially to the stadium. The fire department decided that there might have been enough credibility to the threat that we needed to evacuate to our secondary site, which is here at the 19th Street Church of God. Kids did a great job getting down here."
Police believe the threat was called in from an area gas station. We'll have more details as they become available.
