UPDATE 8/28/2014 10:30 AM
Closing the post office isn't an option for the people of Little Hocking, but the hours of operation will be reduced.
It was confirmed during a meeting Wednesday night the new hours will be Monday through Friday 12:30 to 4:30 p.m. and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Officials say it's an attempt to cut costs.
Changes go into effect in October.
Another area post office could be affected by the U.S. Postal Service's financial problems.
But this one isn't closing.
Several post offices and processing centers in our area have been closed or consolidated in recent years.
The post office in Little Hocking will not be closed, but its hours could be curtailed.
The proposed change is part of a plan by the U.S. Postal Service aimed at keeping rural post offices open.
But, if it is implemented, the weekday hours at the Little Hocking Post Office will be reduced from six and a half hours to four.
"We're running an extreme defecit, partly because people just don't go to the post office like they used to. They're using electronic means of communication instead of the mail. So we need to make adjustments to preserve the post office locally, and on into future generations," says U.S. Postal Service spokesman David VanAllen.
VanAllen says the post office's Saturday hours should not be affected by the change.
A mailing was sent to Little Hocking residents earlier this month notifying them of the possible changes.
It includes a survey asking them to choose alternatives, including the reduced hours.
The postal service plans a public meeting next month to discuss the proposed changes.
It will be held August 27th, beginning at 7:00, at the Little Hocking Volunteer Fire Department on Tower Road, just off Route 50 and 7.
The closest post office to Little Hocking is located in Belpre.
